Alex Ferguson’s new generation of Babes?

The English football season ended with a whimper rather than a bang. A week before yesterday’s disappointing home draw for the national side, a Manchester United team which had strolled to domestic victory was thoroughly outclassed by their Catalan counterparts. With one eye on Barca and the other back at his own early ’90s FA Youth Cup squad (Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, Butt and the Nevilles), Sir Alex Ferguson thinks that a new period of renewal is needed at Old Trafford. But for every Busby Babes and Fergie Fledglings there are many more failed attempts to overhaul teams. Arsene Wenger has kept Arsenal ticking over with waves of young players, but they’ve remained frustrating inches away from silverware. And other past champions (from Blackburn to Liverpool, not to mention Leeds United) would of course love to be in the Gunners’ position. Sir Alex is right about United needing a new generation of Babes – but he’ll know as well as anyone that turning them into winners will be no easy task.

Manchester United’s 19th league title

Manchester United host Blackpool at Old Trafford tomorrow afternoon, but the game is only of real importance to the relegation-threatened away team. United, of course, confirmed their 19th league title last week with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn. Now, 19 might not seem like any sort of landmark, but it means that they’ve finally overtaken Liverpool (stuck on 18 since 1990) in the count. Knocking their sworn rivals “off their flipping perch” was said to be a long-held goal of Sir Alex Ferguson and – domestically at least – he’s finally achieved it. Sir Matt Busby won five titles with United – the first in 1952, the last in 1967. More importantly perhaps, he also took the club to their first European Cup in 1968 at Wembley – the culmination of ten years rebuilding after the death of the Busby Babes. Can Fergie win United’s fourth European Cup at the same ground to put them just one behind Liverpool? We’ll find out on May 28…

More than just a sports ground

So Manchester is a breeding ground for sporting stars – that’s a given. But musical talent can trace it’s roots to the city as well…. This is from Madonna TV

“Friday 27th January 1984 and Madonna makes her 2nd British TV appearance!

“Cutting edge music TV show “The Tube” aired every Friday evening live on Channel 4 TV and on this night it was coming from a legendary nightclub in Manchester in the North of England called “The Hacienda”.

“Madonna accompanied by brother Christopher and Erica Bell, performed 2 songs – “Burning Up” & “Holiday”. Both were lip-synched in front of a live audience at the club.”

From the same year (1984), here’s a photo of Busby with a pic of his Babes (courtesy of the Mirror)

Seeking young footballers to star in Sir Matt Busby feature film

An online audition search for the nation’s next young acting star is underway for upcoming family Britflick Theatre of Dreams, starring Brian Cox and Natascha McElhone.

Shooting in Manchester during summer 2011, Theatre of Dreams is a charming, coming-of-age movie that tells the fictional story of Sir Matt Busby who helps an 11 year old tearaway fulfill his footballing dream, whilst putting his own demons of the Busby Babes to rest. Award-winning actor Brian Cox (Braveheart, The Bourne Identity) stars as Sir Matt Busby, Anne Reid (The Mother) as his wife and Natascha McElhone (Californication, The Truman Show) as the boy’s mum.

A casting call for boys aged 8-12 with either football or acting skills, or a combination of both, is currently in progress, requesting one minute video auditions to be submitted via the film’s website http://todmovie.com. Two-time Emmy nominee and renowned Casting Director Irene Lamb will be judging auditions for the lead and other junior roles. Having worked with many prolific directors including George Lucas, Terry Gilliam and Richard Loncraine, her credits include Star Wars and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, The Great Gatsby, Get Carter, Brazil and The Brothers Grimm.

Theatre of Dreams is being directed by Manchester-born David Scheinmann, a multi-award winning photographer and commercials/music video director. He was noted in Variety as ‘a talent to watch’ following the theatrical release of his debut feature The West Wittering Affair in 2006. Double Emmy-nominated Bill and Ben Productions, Justin Peyton and Manuela Noble are producing. Currently working on animated feature A Liar’s Autobiography: The True Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman, credits include TV docu-series Monty Python: Almost The Truth (Lawyers Cut) as well as features The West Wittering Affair and Chemical Wedding starring Simon Callow, both of which received theatrical releases.

Says David Scheinmann “’Theatre of Dreams’ is a funny and touching family feature – a Billy Elliot meets Bend it Like Beckham – set to capture the hearts and minds of audiences around the world. We’re on a nationwide search to find the film’s young star and in keeping with the theme, our online audition process provides an equal opportunity for all worthy talent to follow their dreams.”

Theatre of Dreams auditions for boys aged 8-12 are open until 18 May 2011. To enter, and for further info, please visit http://todmovie.com/audition/
